Patios & paving
How long does it take to lay a patio?
It depends on size, access and the material. Most garden patios take a few days to a couple of weeks. We give you a clear timeframe with your quote.
Should I choose porcelain or natural stone?
Porcelain is very hard-wearing, stain-resistant and has a clean modern look. Natural stone such as sandstone has more character and colour variation. We can show you both and help you decide.
Can you extend or repair my existing patio?
Yes. We extend existing patios, replace cracked or loose slabs and repoint tired joints so the whole area looks right again.
How long does block paving last?
Laid on a proper sub-base and looked after, block paving lasts for many years, and individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if needed.
Can you repair sunken or broken blocks?
Yes. We lift and relay sunken areas, replace broken blocks and re-sand the joints.
Do I need planning permission for a block paved driveway?
Not usually, as long as a front garden surface over 5 square metres is permeable or drains to a lawn or border. We design to these rules as standard.
What's the difference between hard and soft landscaping?
Hard landscaping is the built elements like paving, walls, steps and fencing. Soft landscaping is the living parts: lawns, plants and hedges. We do both.
Can you sort out a sloping garden?
Yes. Retaining walls, steps and terraces can turn a slope into usable, level areas.
Do you handle the whole project?
Yes, from design through groundwork, building and planting to clearing up at the end.
Do you match new bricks to my house?
We source the closest match we can for colour and size so new walls sit naturally with your property.
Can you fix a leaning or cracked garden wall?
Often yes. Depending on the cause we'll repair, rebuild a section, or rebuild the wall on new footings.
Do garden walls need planning permission?
Walls up to 1 metre next to a road, or 2 metres elsewhere, are usually permitted development. Listed buildings and conservation areas can differ, and we'll advise.
Driveways
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
Not usually, as long as a front garden surface over 5 square metres is permeable or drains to a lawn or border. We design to these rules as standard.
How long will a block paved driveway last?
Laid on a proper sub-base and looked after, block paving lasts for decades, and individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if needed.
Can you repair my existing driveway?
Yes. We lift and relay sunken areas, replace broken blocks, re-sand joints and clean and seal tired paving.
Fencing
How high can my garden fence be?
Generally up to 2 metres without planning permission, or 1 metre where it's next to a road or footpath. Rules can differ for listed buildings.
Timber or concrete posts?
Concrete posts last much longer and don't rot. Timber posts can look softer and suit some styles. We'll help you choose.
Do you remove the old fence?
Yes, we take down and dispose of the old fence as part of the job.
Lawns & artificial grass
When can new turf be laid?
Turf can be laid most of the year, as long as the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged. Spring and autumn are ideal.
How soon can I walk on new turf?
Keep off it as much as you can for the first couple of weeks while it roots, and keep it well watered.
Can you fix a wet or uneven lawn?
Yes. We can level the ground and improve drainage before laying new turf.
Is artificial grass good for dogs?
Yes. We use a permeable base so it drains well, and it can be rinsed down easily.
How long does artificial grass last?
A good-quality grass laid on a proper base typically lasts many years. We'll talk you through the options.
Can you lay it over my existing lawn?
We remove the old turf and prepare the ground properly. Laying straight onto soil leads to dips and weeds.
Do you do small gardens?
Yes. Some of our favourite projects are small front gardens, where a good design makes the biggest difference.
Real turf or artificial grass?
Real turf is cooler, greener for wildlife and cheaper to lay. Artificial grass suits shady spots, heavy use and people who want no mowing. We install both.
Can you just do the planting?
Of course. We can plant up new or existing beds without a full redesign.
Garden rooms & bases
Do I need planning permission for a garden room?
Often not. Most garden rooms are permitted development if they meet the height, position and size limits. Listed buildings and conservation areas have tighter rules, and we'll help you check before work starts.
What base does a garden room need?
Usually a reinforced concrete slab or a well-built base sized to the building. We'll recommend the right option for the structure and your ground.
Can you landscape around an existing garden building?
Yes. We regularly add patios, paths, turf and planting around summerhouses and garden offices.
How thick should a concrete base be?
It depends on the load. A light shed needs less than a garden room or hot tub. We'll size the slab and sub-base to suit what's going on it.
How long before I can build on it?
Concrete needs time to cure. Light buildings can usually go on after a few days; we'll tell you the right wait for your project.
Can you remove an old base first?
Yes. We break out and clear old slabs or paving before laying the new base.
Composite or timber?
Composite costs more upfront but needs almost no maintenance and won't rot or splinter. Timber is cheaper and has a natural look but needs treating.
Do I need planning permission for decking?
Usually not, as long as it's no more than 30cm above the ground and covers no more than half the garden.
Can you build decking on a slope?
Yes. A raised deck on a level frame is one of the best ways to use a sloping garden.
Trees & hedges
Do I need permission to cut down a tree?
Only if it's protected by a Tree Preservation Order or you're in a conservation area. We check before starting so you're covered.
When is the best time for tree work?
Most pruning is best done in late autumn and winter when trees are dormant, but safety work can be done any time.
Do you remove the stump?
Yes, we can remove stumps so the area can be replanted, paved or turfed.
When is the best time to cut a hedge?
Most hedges are trimmed in late summer and again lightly in spring if needed. Heavy reductions are best done in autumn or winter, outside the main nesting season.
Do you take the cuttings away?
Yes, all green waste is cleared and taken away as part of the job.
Can you replace my hedge with a new one?
Yes. We remove the old hedge and roots, improve the soil and plant a new hedge suited to your garden.
Do you take the waste away?
Yes, green waste is cleared and taken away as part of the job.
Can you clear a really overgrown garden?
Yes. We regularly clear neglected gardens, including with a mini digger where needed.
